A Message from the Dean

Dr. Veronica Thompson, Acting Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest faculty at Athabasca University, with a wide variety of programs and courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It includes the Master of Arts in Integrated Studies, the Graduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting, the Graduate Diploma in Heritage Resources Management, the three-year Bachelor of Arts (with thirteen concentrations), the four-year Bachelor of Arts (with thirteen majors), the Bachelor of Professional Arts, the Bachelor of Human Resources and Labour Relations, and the Bachelor of Health Administration. It also includes a variety of undergraduate certificates. Courses managed and taught in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences are also part of other credentials in other Faculties.

The Faculty is currently restructuring into three new Centres, the Centre for Humanities, the Centre for Social Sciences, and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies. These centres are multi-disciplinary in nature, which is novel in Canadian universities. Our websites are being updated to reflect this new structure.

The Office of the Dean provides the overall academic leadership for the students, staff, programs, courses, and centres in the Faculty.

Prior to becoming the Acting Dean, I served as the Associate Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (2010-2011), and as Chair, Centre for Languages and Literatures (2007-2010).

My research interests include Canadian literature, Australian literature, and postcolonial literatures and theories, in particular the intersections of post-colonial and feminist theories in Canadian and Australian women’s settler literature.
